It’s a known fact that men happen to dominate the design industry. When I think of the people I look up to, immediately I think of men. Nick La, Collis Ta’eed, Von Glitschka. Don’t get me wrong, after a while I add Veerle Pieters and Adelle Charles to my list.
Those are two amazing gals with a dream to go far. This domination is not just in Web or Graphic Design, what about Fashion? Think about Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, and the late Alexander McQueen. The person behind Gucci? Man. So, where have the women gone?
Women are there. They’re everywhere; but gender inequality still takes place in society, and on the web as well. Personally, I think that women aren’t out to be pioneers in design.
We create and design great pieces of art, (yes, Web Design is art) but when it comes to leadership, where are we? Maybe men have bigger plans and dreams, or maybe women tend to think realistically with specific goals.
In web design and this little place we call the internet, men happen to be a bit easier to find. But hey, that’s just in terms of dreams, right?
Maybe women would rather focus on being creative instead of having a great web presence. When speaking about women being underrepresented in general, we have to consider obstacles and difficulties women face in life.
They’re mothers, wives, caretakers, with responsibilities that sometimes surpass those of men.
To be great in anything you do, you need to put yourself out there. Way out there. I see women concentrating on themselves, on their craft. For instance, the idea marketing my self and my craft didn’t come along for two years after I began teaching myself how to design websites.
I see blogs run by men giving all the advice on marketing and networking, not women.
Although men have the upper hand, I am confident that women will soon make their presence in society, and online more respected.
